SENIOR PROJECTS 23/24

March 8, 2024
Colina Campus

Come hear from our WSSD seniors about the independent projects they have been pursuing for the past 9 months. In May, 2023, the students were tasked with forming a project that promoted personal development by engaging deeply in a topic or project that included service to others, career preparation, and/or artistic investigation, and the fruits of their work will be shared with our community on March 8th. The projects this year are diverse, ranging from 3D modeling to lavender linguistics, and reflect the diverse interests in our graduating class.

Please arrive just before 5pm so that you can be placed in your tour group.
Alaric Mcgrath

Alaric Mcgrath

3D Modeling and Sculpting

Alaric McGrath is a senior at WSSD. he has an interest in math and engineering. And in his free time he likes to play sports, ski, and use his 3D printer.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Alaric learned CAD and poly modeling using both blender and onshape. He has honed his skills by designing characters and making tools. All leading up to his largest project, a sculpted character that was posed, and rendered on blender. Alaric will be talking about his experiences with the 3D modeling process as well as the differences between CAD and Poly modeling.

Cassian Miller-Felix

Exploring Lavender Linguistics Through Research

Cassian Miller-Felix (they/them) has had a longstanding interest in queer history and stories. Outside of school, they love to read, write, ride horses, and spend time with their dog.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Cassian explored the field of lavender linguistics (language as used by the LGBTQ+ community) through writing a research paper on the gay argots Polari and Swardspeak. Polari was spoken primarily by gay men in mid-1900s Britain, and Swardspeak was (and is) spoken by gay men in the Philippines. Cassian spent many hours researching, drafting, and editing their paper, which will be made available for reading online.

Luca Arthur Smith

Luca Arthur Smith

Luis Camarena

Luis Camarena

3D Prosthetic Hand - Design and Creation

Luis Camarena has been passionate about engineering since he was a little kid. He used to enjoy getting LEGO sets and building them. Now, he has decided to take those applications to another level by choosing to show us his amazing senior project on March 8.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Luis will show us the process he went through in designing and creating a 3D printed prosthetic hand. His goal is to join the movement of producing cost effective, unique prosthetic designs and donate them to children in need. He plans for his first donation to be the design he presents next month. Luis got a 3D printer as a gift for his 18th birthday to help him with his project. Once he received the gift, he researched anatomy and biomechanics of the hand. Then, he found blogs and webinar tutorial series to learn AutoCAD. He also signed up for an online 3D printing course from the University of Chicago. This led him to design the prototype and begin the process of printing parts of his 3D printed prosthetic hand. His goal is to inspire others to join this cause and make a significant impact in others’ lives.

Analysis of Strength and Endurance Based Workouts

Michael James Hefner is a high school student at The Waldorf School Of San Diego. He loves working out at the gym, playing video games and nerding out about science fiction and fitness. If you ask him a gym related question, he would happily give you an answer.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Analysis of strength and endurance based workouts, the differences and how to partake in them. Explaining my personal experience with these workouts.

MJ began by explaining what the difference between strength and endurance was in a fitness sense and then talked about how to optimize each trait in a workout. He then explained what happened or what changed physically and mentally whenever he would focus on one over the other.
